La Podologa es la parte de la medicina que estudia el pie y es considerada un rea de las ciencias de la salud con plena autonoma y responsabilidad sobre su quehacer profesional, trata tanto de enfermedades primarias como secundarias a enfermedades sistmicas; los profesionales del equipo de salud encuentran en el podlogo un apoyo muy til en la resolucin de alteraciones podales. El profesional en podologa constituye un recurso humano insustituible con formacin especializada en el pie, la cual se caracteriza por la constante aplicacin prctica de conocimientos cientficos transformados en tecnologa. Estos recursos humanos requieren de una formacin muy bien estructurada con contenidos y conocimientos cientficos que garanticen la aplicacin tcnica del mismo. La carrera se adentra en el estudio de todas las afecciones que pueden afectar los pies: su prevencin y teraputica.La Podologa tiene tres campos de actuacin; la quiropodia, que se basa en el tratamiento de rozaduras, callosidades, corte e higiene de la ua y cosmetologa del pie, la ortopedia del pie, que consiste en corregir diversas deformidades de los pies a travs de ortesis y plantillas y la terapia fsica del pie, intervenciones por medios fsicos elctricos, trmicos y manuales.En un principio los podlogos se llamaban pedicuros o callistas y de alguna manera, se dedicaban al buen funcionamiento del pie, pero actualmente no cuentan con los conocimientos tcnicos y cientficos suficientes como para atender con efectividad a los clientes en los casos complejos.
