Le Dire et le Dit reprend, avec des remaniements et des mises jour, un certain nombre de travaux chelonns au long des annes 19681984 et relatifs aux problmes linguistiques de l'nonciation. Le thme gnral est que le sens d'un nonc ( le dit ), non seulement comporte des allusions l'vnement historique constitu par l'apparition de l'nonc, mais n'est rien d'autre qu'un commentaire du dire. Dans ce cadre prend place une conception polyphonique de l'nonciation, esquisse dans Les Mots du discours et dveloppe systmatiquement dans les derniers chapitres du recueil. Ce qui est dit par l'nonc propos de son dire, c'est qu'il est le lieu o s'expriment divers sujets , dont la pluralit n'est pas rductible l'unicit du sujet parlant , fondement, jamais mis en question, des thories linguistiques habituellement reues. D'o une enqute sur les statuts diffrents attribus ces sujets, sur leur caractre ncessaire ou facultatif, sur la faon dont ils sont marqus dans l'organisation grammaticale de la phrase. Cet ouvrage est paru en 1984.
