Product DescriptionBrings together three true disaster stories as told from the perspectives of young survivors, bringing to life the events surrounding the sinking of theEmpress of Irelandand the crashes of theItaliaandHindenburg. From School Library JournalGrade 47Children looking for exciting, reallife survival stories will be attracted by the cover of this collection of firstperson accounts of three disasters: the 1914 shipwreck of the Empress of Ireland, the 1928 crash of the airship Italia, and the 1930 crash of the dirigible R101. However, the lack of illustrations and rather pedestrian writing is disappointing. There is liberal fictionalizing of dialogue, thoughts, etc. and there are no source notes to establish veracity. The list of recommended reading contains mostly outofprint and old titles that will be hard to locate. Libraries looking for more on famous shipwrecks, including the Empress of Ireland, may do well with Robert D. Ballard's Ghost Liners: Exploring the World's Greatest Lost Ships (Little, Brown, 1998). Youngsters wanting information on dirigibles would be better served by Patrick O'Brien's The Hindenburg (Holt, 2000).Jennifer Ralston, Harford County Public Library, Belcamp, MD Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.
