This is an edition of what are arguably Leibnizs three most important presentations of his metaphysical system: the Discourse on Metaphysics, from 1686, and The Principles of Nature and of Grace and The Monadology, from 1714. Based on the Latta and Montgomery translations and revised by the editor, these texts set out the essentials of Leibnizs mature metaphysical views. The edition includes an introductory essay and a set of appendices of seventeenth and eighteenthcentury texts, which help illuminate and contextualize Leibnizs ideas. Among these are extensive passages from Leibnizs Theodicy, many of which are cited in The Monadology.

I absolutely love the cover of this book! It's a lovely addition to my collection, and the writings are fascinating. I wish it had a bit more in terms of supplementary materials, though. Still, it's a must-read!

Not What I Expected
I thought this edition would have more modern commentary, but it mostly sticks to the original texts. It’s well-printed and the pages feel nice, but I was hoping for a bit more analysis to help with understanding.

This Broadview edition provides excellent context around Leibniz’s writings. The introductory notes are insightful and really enhance my understanding of metaphysics. I highly recommend it for any philosophy enthusiast!

I bought this book for my philosophy class, and it's been a great addition. The layout is clean, and the text is easy to read. However, I wish there were more discussion questions at the end to facilitate our study groups better.
