La agricultura ecolgica se caracteriza por utilizar mtodos que potencien la fertilidad natural de los suelos y su capacidad productiva, para lograr su sostenibilidad en el tiempo. Los radionclidos, que se encuentran de forma natural en los suelos, pueden modificar su contenido en terrenos agrcolas por la aplicacin de fertilizantes procedentes de materias primas que de forma natural contienen radionclidos. Los fosfatos, que forman la base habitual de este tipo de abonos qumicos minerales, contienen usualmente cantidades apreciables de uranio y de sus descendientes de las series naturales de desintegracin.
