Con el mismo criterio con que Gaud construa estructuras a partir de modelos formados por hilos cargados (funiculares), se ha desarrollado un mtodo para simular con computadoras la deformacin de membranas continuas. Su inversin da estructuras antifuniculares de altsima eficiencia. El mtodo de grandes deformaciones (MGD) permite encontrar formas funiculares de comportamiento quasi membranal, o sea libres de flexiones, y de una gran resistencia y rigidez. A diferencia del hilo cargado cuya solucin es nica, la superficie cargada puede tomar una gran variedad de formas, segn sean las condiciones de borde, internas, de cargas, etc. Se muestran resultados excelentes no slo para cargas gravitatorias sino tambin para las acciones del viento y del sismo. Se completa con ejemplos de diseo realizados con el MGD y verificados con programas de elementos finitos.
