Die Analyse eines Diskurses, der, laut Brown/Yule im Gegensatz zum Text, einem Prozess unterzogen und situationsgebunden ist, kann also nicht nur anhand linguistischer Regeln erfolgen, sondern muss ebenso die Formen bercksichtigen, die die Sprache im Gebrauch hervorbringt. Im Diskurs verankert sind die Informations und Intonationsstruktur, genauer gesagt definiert sich nach Michael Halliday die Informationsstruktur a)durch die einzelnen Informationseinheiten und b)deren Korrelation zur intonatorischen Phrasierung. Die Informationsstruktur ist weder mit der syntaktischen noch der grammatischen Struktur gleichzusetzen, sie stellt vielmehr den Aufbau eines Satzes in der Frage nach dem Gegenstand und der Aussage dar. Die Gliederung eines Satzes bzw. einer uerung erfolgte in der Prager Schule (z.B. Bene)nach Topik' und Fokus' die Termini Thema'/Rhema' wurden eingefhrt, die spter dann von Halliday bernommen wurden. Die Differenzierung von Thema und Rhema grndet in der Unterscheidung alter versus neuer bzw. bekannter versus nicht bekannter Information und dem Blick auf die Intonationsstruktur des Satzes. Als zweiter Aspekt spielt in der ThemaRhemaGliederung (TRG) der Intonationsverlauf eine in den Theorien mehr oder weniger respektierte Rolle. Janet Pierrehumbert und Julia Hirschberg befassten sich eingehend mit einer Intonationskontur zur Diskursinterpretation' , die sie an Hand von einem differenzierten System von Tnen und Akzenten verfassten.
