El Per es el segundo pas de Latinoamrica en superficie de bosques, con alrededor de 74 millones de Has. Solo en las ltimas dcadas el pas ha perdido ocho millones de Has. de bosque y se estima que el promedio anual de deforestacin de nuestros bosques es de 300,000 Has., afectando la biodiversidad de la zona y el medio ambiente (Minas y Pozos, 2007). La deforestacin de la vegetacin adyacente a los cuerpos de agua, podra provocar cambios en las comunidades de peces. En el valle del Pichis la deforestacin riberea es ocasionada por la poblacin nativa mediante una agricultura de autoconsumo, mientras que los colonos de mayores recursos producen la prdida de cobertura vegetal en menor grado, aunque en los ltimos aos el incremento ha sido notable. El objetivo del estudio fue conocer la composicin y distribucin de la comunidad de peces en quebradas del alto Ro Pichis, comparando reas de bosques forestadas y reas deforestadas con presencia de pastizales; y se realiz bajo el auspicio de la fundacin MacArthur, a travs de la ONG "IBC", en el marco del proyecto: Improving fisheries management and building local capacity to protect the Pachitea watershed of central Peru.
