Se estudi la diversidad gentica en poblaciones naturales de Zamia furfuracea (Zamiaceae, Cycadales), con un linaje de cerca de 300 millones de aos y cuya distribucin de la especie se limita al estado de Veracruz, Mxico. Las poblaciones se analizaron utilizando marcadores aloenzimticos para obtener los estimadores de la diversidad gentica. Se encontr un polimorfismo alto a nivel de especie. La estructura gentica, detect exceso de homocigotos en todas las poblaciones, indicando prdida de variabilidad gentica por efecto de la cruza entre individuos emparentados. La diferenciacin gentica fue relativamente alta, as la mayor parte de variacin gentica se debe a las diferencias entre poblaciones. Se hizo un diagnstico de su estado de conservacin gentico y se propone cmo conservar dicho pool. Es importante sealar que a pesar de su comercializacin alrededor del mundo, este es uno de los primeros estudios donde se obtiene informacin con una base cientfica sobre su estado gentico actual, se espera que sea un primer acercamiento a estudios que consideren su demografa, interacciones ecolgicas y filogeografa utilizando marcadores moleculares de DNA.
