Er wurde 1295 in den "Rat der Hundert" der kaisertreuen Ghibellinen von Florenz gewhlt. Die papsttreuen Guelfen verurteilten ihn 1302 zum Tod auf dem Scheiterhaufen. Er lebte fortan in Verona und Lucca, vermutlich auch in Paris. In Ravenna starb er dann an der Malaria.
