More than almost any other German painter, Otto Dix (18911969) and his works have profoundly influenced the popular notion of the Weimar Republic. His paintings were among the most graphic visual representatives of that period, exposing with unsparing and wicked wit the instability and contradictions of the time. This volume presents Dixs oeuvre chronologically, with fullcolor reproductions on almost every page and a detailed discussion by Eva Karcher, whose doctoral dissertation at the University of Munich was titled Eros and Thanatos in the Work of Otto Dix and who has contributed to numerous catalogues and a monograph (Munich, 1986) and collaborated on important Dix exhibitions. A chronology and extensive bibliography are also included.
