Die Gezeiten oder, wie man sie in mehr volkstiimlicher Weise zumeist zu nennen pflegt, die Ebbe und Flut, sind eine die ganze Erde umfassende, groBartige Erscheinung, die sich nicht nur in den Wassermassen der Meere, sondern auch in der Lufthiille der Erde und in der festen Erdkruste auBert. Es gibt zwei Arten der gegenseitigen Beeinflussung zweier Himmelskorper. Das eine Band, das sie verbindet, ist das der Strahlung, das andere das der Gravitation oder Massenanziehung. Die Gezeiten sind ein be sonderer Fall der Anziehungseinwirkung der Massen von Mond und Sonne auf die Massenschichten, aus denen die Erde aufgebaut ist. AIle die gesetzmaBigen Erscheinungen der Gezeiten lassen sich aus diesen Einwirkungen verstehen. 1m vorliegenden Biich lein ist der Versuch unternommen worden, die Entstehung der Gezeiten in den drei Erdschichten: Meer, Atmosphare und Erd feste und die komplizierten V organge, die sich in ihnen abspielen, ohne mathematische Hilfsmittel dem allgemeinen Verstandnis naher zu bringen. Dies ist keine leichte Aufgabe, und der Ver fasser muB die Leser giitigst bitten, den gegebenen Ausfiihrungen aufmerksam und nachdenkend zu folgen und rnitzuiiberlegen.
