La evaluacin del estado de los recursos marinos, sobreexplotados en buena parte, es fundamental para la gestin adecuada de los mismos y, por consiguiente, para su explotacin sostenible. Para ello, determinar la edad y el crecimiento de las especies de inters comercial es bsico, pues permite conocer mejor su ciclo vital y determinar la estructura demogrfica de las capturas, que es utilizada para evaluar el tamao y estado de explotacin de sus poblaciones mediante el uso de modelos estructurados por edad. Este trabajo describe el crecimiento de cuatro especies de elevado inters pesquero en el Atlntico europeo: gallos (Lepidorhombus boscii y L. whiffiagonis) y rapes (Lophius piscatorius y L. budegassa). La edad en estas especies se estima mediante la interpretacin de los anillos anuales en sus piezas esquelticas. La tasa de crecimiento del rape blanco tambin se estima mediante el marcadorecaptura de individuos. El seguimiento de cohortes contribuye a validar la fiabilidad de los criterios de interpretacin de la edad. Tambin se analizan las variaciones sexuales, geogrficas y batimtricas del crecimiento de los gallos.
