Fue un poeta y ensayista inclinado al naturalismo filosfico, que lo llev a convertirse en un crtico acrrimo de la naciente sociedad americana, cuyo mercantilismo pragmtico violentaba los principios del puritanismo, que haba sido la raz moral y social de los colonos ingleses que fundaran los Estados Unidos, y que el propio Thoreau practicaba con un fervor que es evidente en sus obras y que les da un tono teolgico, o trascendentalista, como se ha dado en llamar a la poesa y la ideologa que fue saliendo de su pluma a lo largo de su vida.
