Dahinter steht die Meinung, dass sich Menschen in interagierenden Gruppen gegenseitig geistig, also kognitiv, stimulieren und somit kreativere Ideen als Einzelpersonen hervorbringen. Andere Positionen beziehen sich darauf, dass soziale Einflsse die Zusammenarbeit und somit auch die effektive Hervorbringung von Ideen in Gruppen behindern. Der US Amerikanische Pdagoge und Historiker Whitney Griswold (19061963) drckte es seinerzeit folgendermaen aus: Could Hamlet have been written by committee, or the Mona Lisa painted by a club? Could the New Testament have been composed as a conference report? Creative ideas don't spring from groups. They spring from individuals.' (zit. nach Nijstad, 2000, S. 1) Oder wiederum mit anderen, volksweisheitlichen' Worten: Viele Kche verderbenden Brei.' Trotzdem bleibt die Arbeit in Gruppen ein wesentlicher Aspekt im Umfeld eines Individuums und tritt in alltglichen Situationen und Schaupltzen, wie in der Schule, am Arbeitsplatz oder in der Politik immer wieder auf. Eine hufig verbreitete und sehr populre Art der gemeinsamen Ideenfindung ist das sogenannte Brainstorming, welches von Alex F. Osborn (1953, 1957), dem Leiter einer Werbeagentur, entwickelt wurde. Der Begriff Brainstorming' entsprang dabei dem Gedanken using the brain to storm a problem' (Osborn, 1957, S. 80). Zu Deutsch: Das Gehirn zum Sturm auf ein Problem verwenden.'.
