Die Ursache dieser Entwicklung liegt nicht allein in der Rezession, in der sich Deutschland und andere westliche Industrienationen seit geraumer Zeit befinden, sondern vielmehr in der Ausgestaltung der Beziehung zwischen den beiden wichtigsten Marktparteien, den Lebensmitteleinzelhndlern und den Produzenten von Lebensmitteln. Dieses Verhltnis ist bis heute gekennzeichnet von der traditionellen Einkufer/VerkuferDenkweise. Beide Seiten feilschen um die Preise und versuchen jeweils fr ihren Arbeitgeber den maximalen Profit zu erzielen. Auf der Strecke bleibt zum einen die effiziente Gestaltung des Gesamtsystems und zum anderen die Fokussierung smtlicher Aktivitten auf den Verbraucher. hnlich wie in anderen Branchen (z. B. in der Automobilbranche) deckten zunchst die Marktfhrer in den USA diese Entwicklung auf und entwarfen unter Einbeziehung smtlicher Marktteilnehmer ein Konzept, das sowohl die HerstellerHandelsbeziehung reformierte als auch die Verbraucherorientierung forcierte: Efficient Consumer Response (ECR). ECR basiert auf einer Kooperation zwischen Hersteller und Hndler1 mit dem Ziel, smtliche Prozesse zwischen Produktion und Verkauf auf ihre Effizienz hin zu berprfen und gegebenenfalls Prozesse, die fr den Konsumenten keine Wertschpfung darstellen, zu modifizieren bzw. zu eliminieren.
