In einer bemerkenswerten Anzahl von Interpretationen wurde versucht, die Reitergeschichte" zu verstehen und zu erklren, wobei eine berraschende Vielzahl von Anstzen in der Forschungsliteratur zu finden ist. Die Novelle wurde auf ihren historischen Hintergrund hin interpretiert, in psychologischer, soziologischer und philosophischer Hinsicht ausgelegt, auf ihre Tier und Todessymbolik hin geprft. Daher muss jede Arbeit, die sich diese Novelle als Untersuchungstext whlt, zuerst festlegen, welche Grundannahmen sie als gltig behandeln wird. Ein ganzheitlicher Ansatz, der alle verschiedenen Theorien beachtet, ist auf Grund ihrer fundamentalen Differenzen kaum mglich. Er soll hier auch nicht versucht werden. Die folgende Arbeit widmet sich dem Versuch, die Reitergeschichte" auf eine psychologisch orientierte Fragestellung hin zu berprfen. Die Novelle wird als Geschichte einer Selbstentfremdung gelesen werden, in der der Zentralcharakter Wachtmeister Anton Lerch sich von seiner bisherigen Lebenssituation und seinen gewohnten Denkmustern entfernt. Das Hauptaugenmerk soll dabei auf der Frage liegen, inwieweit der Doppelgnger, der dem Wachtmeister erscheint, eine Manifestation seiner psychischen Situation ist. Im Rahmen der Analyse wird zuerst eine Untersuchung des Entwicklungsprozesses vorgenommen, den Lerch durchluft und ohne dessen Verstndnis keine Auslegung des Doppelgngers mglich ist.
