Paul Backes hat schon einmal bessere Zeiten erlebt. Er ist Anfang 50 und momentan Redakteur fr Gerichtsreportagen und Kriminalflle bei einer Schwarzwlder Regionalzeitung. Er wohnt nach der Trennung von seiner Frau Toni und seinen drei Kindern in einem winzigen Schwarzwalddorf, quasi am Ende der Welt. Eines Tages stt er bei der Fahrt zu einem Termin auf ein seltsames Gespann, bestehend aus einem alten Unimog und einem Bauwagen. Der Bauwagen ist fast ganz ausgebrannt, der Unimog nicht ganz so mitgenommen. Der Fahrer liegt im Freudenstdter Krankenhaus im Koma. Er wurde offensichtlich niedergeschlagen. Schon relativ bald stellt Paul Backes fest, dass er den Fahrer aus seiner Heidelberger Studenten und Kommunezeit kennt. Im Unimog wird auch noch ein Adressbuch mit chiffrierten Adressen gefunden. Das alles lsst ihm keine Ruhe und er beginnt Nachforschungen anzustellen. Er erinnert sich zunchst nicht an so vieles aus dieser Zeit, er wei nur, dass dessen Schwester damals als RAFMitglied steckbrieflich gesucht wurde.
