El libro titulado 'El Abencerraje y la hermosa Jarifa' narra un hecho que se sita en la frontera andaluza entre los moros y cristianos en el siglo XV, atribuido a Rodrigo de Narvez, alcaide de Antequera; la narracin es una novela corta en la que se cuenta la generosidad del alcaide cristiano para con un caballero moro, Abindarrez, de la familia de los Abencerrajes, al que vence con las armas y luego deja libre para que pueda ir a sus bodas con Jarifa. Impreso en varias ocasiones, se recoge aqu la mejor versin literaria de la novela, publicada en el 'Inventario' de Antonio de Villegas (1565), junto con los romances que fueron apareciendo sobre los protagonistas del suceso contado. En conjunto, la novela y los romances representan una obra literaria que el lector percibe como una leccin de generosidad del caballero cristiano para con el moro; esta leccin tambin puede interpretarse como un signo de tolerancia entre las 'leyes' (religiones, situaciones culturales) que se haban enfrentado en la Edad Media en Espaa y, en este caso, en Andaluca. El Abencerraje puede considerarse como uno de los orgenes de la figura del moro noble que habra de proyectarse sobre la literatura europea.
