Collin Fenwick es el joven hurfano que vive con las solteronas Talbo: Verena, la mujer ms rica del pueblo, y Dolly, que ha hipotecado su vida al cuidado de su hermana y de la casa. Ambas padecen de soledad. Dolly slo halla distraccin en los ratos que pasa con Catherine, una negra que realiza las labores domsticas.
