La obra, que no vio la luz en forma impresa hasta 1528, un ao antes de la muerte de su autor, acaecida en Toledo siendo ya sbdito del emperador Carlos V, est dividida en cuatro libros o dilogos que tratan distintas cuestiones bien sintetizadas por ngel Crespo en su magnfica introduccin. Su lectura, que se ofrece en este volumen en la admirable traduccin de Juan Boscn, mantiene hoy en da, como poco, un doble valor: por un lado, ofrece un retrato inigualable de un ambiente, de un pensamiento, fundamentales para la civilizacin europea, pero adems brinda de forma constante a lo largo de sus pginas ejemplo de tolerancia los personajes que en l intervienen no tratan nunca de imponer una solucin o un criterio ni de erigirse en maestros, virtud que cinco siglos despus de su redaccin parece continuar fi gurando entre las asignaturas pendientes de la sociedad moderna.
