La participacin de Mxico en el Tratado de Libre Comercio para Amrica del Norte (TLCAN) fue un importante paso adelante para la consolidacin del programa de reestructuracin econmica y de incorporacin del pas al proceso de globalizacin. La apuesta fundamental del gobierno mexicano se concentr en los Estados Unidos de Norteamrica. En un inicio, Mxico, Estados Unidos y Canad no contemplaron dentro del TLCAN las repercusiones ambientales de la apertura comercial. Fueron diversos grupos ambientalistas los que empezaron a ejercer presin sobre asuntos colaterales implicados en el Tratado, a saber, el deterioro ambiental y las cuestiones laborales. La unin de varios grupos ambientalistas trinacionales dio lugar a los acuerdos paralelos sobre medio ambiente. Su intencin era proteger las fronteras comunes frente al deterioro ambiental que la apertura econmica podra causar. Este libro muestra de qu manera se configuraron las negociaciones sobre el cuidado ambiental bajo el TLCAN firmado por Mxico, Estados Unidos y Canad y los resultados a diecisis aos de vigencia.
