En el presente libro se analizan, a travs de relatos de vida y de un mtodo etnogrfico, cmo un grupo de familias mexicanas de extraccin obrera experimentaron la importancia de la escuela en distintos momentos de sus vidas. Los padres y sus hijos narraron los motivos que tuvieron para ir a la escuela, las condiciones familiares y sociales en las que vivieron, la importancia que se le atribua a la escuela en sus familias, las decisiones que llevaron a varios de los jvenes a dejar de estudiar para elegir otras oportunidades de vida y la persistencia que otros mantuvieron para hacer de la escuela su espacio de realizacin personal. Se discute en el libro si los padres y sus hijos consideraron sus trayectorias en la escuela como xito o como fracaso escolar. Se concluye que la importancia de la escuela que las personas experimentan se construye en el entrecruce de valoraciones culturales, constreimientos socioeconmicos y transformaciones familiares de poca, as como en las apreciaciones subjetivas y de agencia personal de cada individuo. En ese sentido, ni el xito ni el fracaso escolar son resultado del actuar individual ni se gestan en recorridos escolares lineales.
