Lo que casi nadie sabe es que si hoy sigue vivo ese patrimonio de la humanidad es gracias a un ingls llamado Collingwood Ingram, cuya historia nos descubre este libro.Ingram, hijo de una familia rica, se interes en su adolescencia por la ornitologa, y el entusiasmo lo llev a viajar a Japn para escuchar el canto de los pjaros de aquellos parajes. Con el tiempo fue abandonando la pasin ornitolgica y la sustituy por la horticultura, y en el pas asitico qued fascinado por las mltiples variedades de cerezos, de las que se calcula que haba unas doscientas cincuenta. Cuando en 1919 se instal con su familia en Kent, descubri alborozado que en el jardn de la casa haba dos esplndidos cerezos japoneses, que cultiv con mimo.En 1926 emprendi un nuevo viaje a Japn en busca de esos rboles y descubri alarmado que, debido a la occidentalizacin y modernizacin del pas y a la decisin de apostar por una nica variedad clonada, se estaba perdiendo la riqusima diversidad de cerezos japoneses, incluido el espectacular Taihaku o gran blanco. Ingram dedic su vida a salvaguardar esos rboles y a proteger la tradicin de la sakura (palabra japonesa para referirse al cerezo en flor) hasta su muerte, ya centenario, en 1981.Este es en parte un libro sobre botnica, pero fundamentalmente trata sobre una pasin y una obsesin, sobre la preservacin de un patrimonio esttico mediante una lucha callada y constante. Trata tambin sobre la historia de dos pases y dos culturas; sobre el final del mundo victoriano, en el que naci Ingram en 1880, y sobre el convulso siglo XX. La fascinante historia de un hombre enigmtico y de un rbol cuya floracin es de una belleza que admira al mundo entero.
