Resulta especialmente significativa su evolucin desde los orgenes como druida celta en poemas galeses del siglo VIII hasta la Italia del siglo XVI, donde Merln ya es el clebre consejero del rey Arturo, el gran maestro en magia y hechizos, el protagonista de un nacimiento misterioso y la vctima de un final trgico. En particular, el presente estudio se centra en la descripcin que Ludovico Ariosto hace de Merln en su Orlando Furioso (1532), con unos rasgos tan particulares que sugieren la posible consulta de ciertos materiales que el poeta pudo tener a su disposicin.
