En primer lugar, en el presente trabajo de investigacin, se demostr que Penicillium chrysogenum es capaz de utilizar cido pipeclico para complementar los requerimientos nutricionales de mutantes auxtrofos de lisina (lys). La clonacin del gen que codifica la sacaropina reductasa (gen lys7) y la caracterizacin bioqumica y molecular de mutantes auxtrofos de lisina e incapaces de utilizar cido pipeclico para complementar dicha auxotrofa (lys/Pip), permitieron determinar que en este hongo filamentoso el cido pipeclico se convierte en lisina. En segundo lugar, se demostr que P. chrysogenum es capaz de sintetizar cido pipeclico. El gen lys7 fue interrumpido por la tcnica de la doble recombinacin. La cepa interrumpida (SR1) es auxtrofa de lisina y acumula altos niveles de P6C cuando se crece con Llisina como nica fuente de nitrgeno y se aade cido D,Lalfaaminoadpico (AAA) al medio de cultivo, demostrndose que el cido pipeclico se sintetiza a partir del AAA y no a partir del catabolismo de lisina. La cepa SR1 podra utilizarse para producir metabolitos secundarios que contengan cido pipeclico con interesantes actividades farmacolgicas.
