Pese a que lo siguen haciendo, muchos estudiantes y jvenes se preguntan indirectamente por la razn de su asistencia a la escuela. Paralelamente, desde diversos mbitos acadmicos y directivos asociados al campo de la educacin, se cuestiona sobre lo que sta ofrece a la vida de los estudiantes. Ms all de su concepcin tradicional como una "casa de estudios", en las instituciones escolares de Latinoamerica se construyen diariamente diversos sentidos sobre la escuela, que incluyen su cualidad protectora o de ascenso social. Sin embargo, tanto las promesas modernas de la educacin como sus apuestas en las escuelas, se desmoronan dando paso a otras formas de ser y de estar en ellas. En este trabajo se analiza el sentido de la escuela para un grupo de jvenes escolarizados de Bogot, y se lo contrasta con los resultados de investigaciones latinoamericanas afines. Desnaturalizar los aos que pasamos en las escuelas facilita pensar en sus eventuales modos de transformacin, as como en sus imposibilidades. La pregunta: para qu ir a la escuela?, ahora se formula con mayores incertidumbres que certezas. Sus respuestas reflejan una ponderacin similar.
