La historia novelesca es aparentemente sencilla, una pasin amorosa entre dos personajes, una dama, Beatriz, hija nica de don Alonso Ossorio, y el joven caballero don lvaro Yez, seor de Bembibre y sobrino de don Rodrigo, maestre del Temple en Castilla. Ambos, prometidos desde nios, se enfrentarn a lo previsible de todo destino romntico: la agnica crisis de la felicidad, personificada en la figura de un tercer personaje, el conde de Lemos, radical y poderoso enemigo de los templarios. El tringulo de la peripecia amorosa deviene entonces en escenario mayor para otras intrigas, la lucha por el poder temporal, el acomodo de los intereses de clase que llevan al padre de Beatriz a favorecer la relacin de esta con el nuevo pretendiente.
