Esta investigacin pretende responder a la siguiente pregunta: por qu el servicio de transporte pblico en la ciudad de La Paz (Bolivia), es producido por una agrupacin de propietarios de vehculos y chferes, bajo la denominacin de Sindicato de Transportistas, y no por una empresa (pblica o privada) propietaria de todos los vehculos y contratante de chferes asalariados? Para responder a esta pregunta se ha descrito el proceso de trabajo y su organizacin en la produccin del servicio de transporte pblico, se ha analizado la rentabilidad en tres unidades econmicas de transporte y se ha descrito las caractersticas sociales y polticas que asume la oprganizacin de transportistas. Todo esto gracias a una investigacin etnogrfica desarrollada al interior del grupo de transportistas Hito "45", del Sindicato Mixto de Transportes Litoral de la ciudad de La PazBolivia.
