Los ecosistemas coralinos albergan una gran biodiversidad, lo que les confiere importancia ecolgica, econmica y social. El ecosistema marino de IxtapaZihuatanejo cuenta con 12 arrecifes coralinos, cuyo tamao oscila entre una y 10 ha por lo que pueden ser considerados los ms grandes de la costa del Pacfico Mexicano. Tambin, debido a la cantidad de especies de corales, peces y equinodermos que se encuentran ah, el ecosistema se ubica entre uno de los ms diversos en comparacin con ambientes similares de Oaxaca o Jalisco. El objetivo de esta investigacin fue estimar el valor monetario de conservar el ecosistema y su biodiversidad para as generar informacin relevante para la toma de decisiones entorno al mismo. Se utiliz el Mtodo de Valoracin Contingente, aplicado a los turistas del lugar, debido a que se adecua a las caractersticas del bien en cuestin y mide tanto sus valores de uso como los de no uso, constituyendo estos ltimos una parte importante del valor de los bienes y servicios ambientales. La investigacin tambin recolect informacin socioeconmica importante a travs de entrevistas a los actores involucrados en la admn. y aprovechamiento del ecosistema.
