Elia ist einer, der gegen korrupte Herrscher auftritt, fur ein kompromissloses Bekenntnis zu dem einen Gott eifert, aus einem unverbruchlichen Gottvertrauen heraus Wundertaten vollbringt, der am Leben verzweifelt und dennoch an seinem Gott festhalt, der schliesslich im Feuersturm zu Gott entruckt und so zum Hoffnungstrager und Vorboten der kunftigen Heilszeit wird. Auf diese Erzahlmuster haben die Evangelisten immer wieder Bezug genommen und ihre Jesusgeschichte mit zahlreichen Anklangen an die Eliagestalt ausgestattet. Auch der Koran weiss ihn lobend zu erwahnen, nimmt Elia jedoch viel starker wieder in die lange Traditionskette der Propheten vor und nach ihm zuruck, die in Mohammed, dem Siegel der Propheten, ihren Hohepunkt erreicht. In der islamischen Uberlieferung aber entwickeln sich die Prophetenerzahlungen spater noch einmal zu einer ganz neuen, eigenen Literaturgattung, die zum festen Bestandteil von Theologie und Frommigkeit wird. Insofern erscheint Elia in der Perspektive von Judentum, Christentum und Islam als Exponent des Prophetentums uberhaupt. In den Erzahlungen von Elia und anderen Propheten kommt die Erfahrung des Gottlichen mit ihren Schrecken wie ihrem Trost ganz unmittelbar und anschaulich zur Sprache.
