Vor dem Hintergrund vergleichbarer Missstnde in nahezu allen arabischen Lndern nhrten die raschen Regimestrze in Tunesien und gypten und der damit verbundene Einstieg in einen politischen Transformationsprozess die Hoffnung arabischer Vlker auf einen umfassenden politischen Wandel in der ganzen Region und ermutigte vor allem junge Menschen, den Unmut ber ihre Lebensbedingungen auf die Strae zu tragen und nicht lnger vor der staatlichen Repression zurckzuschrecken. Whrend aber die Revolten in Tunesien, gypten und Libyen letztendlich zu einem Sturz des alten Regimes fhrten, zeigt sich das AssadRegime, auch fast ein Jahr nach Ausbruch der Proteste, noch immer resistent gegenber Massendemonstrationen und bewaffneten Aufstnden im eigenen Land sowie gegenber dem zunehmend steigenden Druck externer Akteure. Diese Studie analysiert die Vernderungen in den internen Herrschaftsstrukturen der syrischen Elite. Im Kern wird dabei auf den Elitenansatz der Transformationstheorie sowie auf das Konzept des Elitenwandels, wie es Volker Perthes fr die arabische Welt eingefhrt hat, zurckgegriffen. Die Autorin untersucht einerseits die Vernderungen der syrischen Elitenstrukturen unter Bashar alAssad bis zum Ausbruch der arabischen Revolutionsbewegungen und fhrt andererseits eine hypothetische Untersuchung der ntigen Voraussetzungen fr einen zuknftigen Elitenwandel in Syrien vor dem Hintergrund der gegenwrtigen Entwicklungen durch. Im Ergebnis wird gezeigt, inwieweit sich die syrischen Herrschaftsstrukturen verndert haben und ob dies fr einen Elitenwandel ausreicht.
