The American decorator Elsie de Wolfe (18581950) was the international sets preeminent hostess in Paris during the interwar years. She had a legendary villa in Versailles, where in the late 1930s she held two fabulous partiesher Circus Ballsthat marked the end of the social scene that her friend Cole Porter perfectly captured in his songs, as the clouds of war swept through Europe. Charlie Scheips tells the story of these glamorous parties using a wealth of previously unpublished photographs and introducing a large cast of aristocrats, beauties, politicians, fashion designers, movie stars, moguls, artists, caterers, florists, party planners, and decorators. A landmark work of social history and a poignant vision of a vanished world, Scheipss book belongs on the shelf with Abrams classics such as Slim Aarons: Once Upon A Time and Tony Duquette.

I was excited to read "Frivolity Before the Storm" but, honestly, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. The premise was interesting, yet I felt some parts lacked depth. It’s more of a coffee table book than a deep dive, which is fine, just not what I was hoping for.

Gorgeous Insights, Beautiful Illustrations
This book is just stunning! Elsie de Wolfe’s views on Paris are insightful and make you feel like you’re walking alongside her. The illustrations are an added bonus. I bought this for myself but plan to get more copies as gifts. It’s a real treasure!

A Delightful Read for Paris Lovers
"Frivolity Before the Storm" by Elsie de Wolfe is such a charming book! The way she captures Paris life is just beautiful. I bought it as a gift for my sister who adores French culture, and she’s already halfway through. Totally worth it for anyone who loves a touch of elegance in their reading!

Interesting but a Bit Slow in Parts
I found Elsie de Wolfe's writing style in "Frivolity Before the Storm" intriguing, but it dragged a little in the middle. The Parisian backdrop was lovely, though, and I enjoyed the insights into her life. It's a decent read overall, but not the most gripping. Might not be for everyone.

Not What I Expected
I thought I’d love "Frivolity Before the Storm" considering its elegant subject, but I was a bit disappointed. Some sections felt repetitive, and the narrative didn't draw me in as much as I hoped. The cover is beautiful though, so it might look nice on a shelf!
