Die Entdeckung des australis chen Augenarztes McALISTER GREGG iiber die schadigende Wirkung des Rubeolenerregers auf den menschlichen Keimling hat die Aufmerksamkeit weiter medizinischer Kreise auf die Bedeutung auBerer Faktoren fiir die Entstehung von MiBbildungen beim Menschen geweckt. Trotz einer umfangreichen Literatur und der Be statigung dieser Beobachtungen in aller Welt haben unsere Kenntnisse iiber die Pathogenese der sog. "Embryopathia rubeolica" in den letzten 15 Jahren kaum Fortschritte zu verzeichnen. Ich hatte Gelegenheit, eine groBere Zahl von menschlichen Embryonen verschiedenen Alters, deren Miitter im Verlaufe des ersten Trimesters der Schwangerschaft an Rubeolen erkrankten, histologisch zu untersuchen. Es ist mir gelungen, die Krankheitserscheinungen in ihren ersten Anfangen und auch den Infektionsweg des Erregers weitgehend abzuklaren. Dariiber hinaus standen mir Keimlinge zur Verfiigung, deren Miitter in der empfindlichen Phase an einer andern Viruserkrankung, wie Varicellen, Mumps, Influenza, Hepatitis epidemica und Poliomyelitis, litten. Die Untersuchungen an diesen Keimlingen erganzen die Befunde bei Embryopathia rubeolica und vermitteln mit diesen zusammen eine klare Einsicht in die Pathogenese der embryonalen Erkrankung. Die meisten Befunde werden in diesem Buche zum erstenmal publiziert. Da sich bis heute erst Ansatze fiir das Verstandnis der pranatalen Pathologie finden, muBte alles von Grund auf erarbeitet werden. Zu speziellem Danke bin ich Herrn Dozent Dr. O. THALHAMMER, Wien, verpflichtet. Er hat mir in zuvorkommender Weise die Abb. 310 zur Verfiigung gestellt. Danken mochte ich aber auch Herrn Dr. G.
