En las ltimas dcadas paralelamente al desarrollo de la industria petrolera ha aumentado la contaminacin antropognica en los ecosistemas marinos. El vertimiento de petrleo crudo y sus derivados provocan efectos negativos a corto, mediano y largo plazo. La eliminacin de los contaminantes de forma natural puede tardar aos, e incluso no ocurrir; para acelerar este proceso y garantizar la recuperacin del ecosistema daado, se emplean tcnicas de biorremediacin, vertiente emergente de la biotecnologa ambiental que se basa en el empleo de la actividad metablica microbiana para degradar los hidrocarburos del petrleo. La aplicacin de esta tecnologa en los ecosistemas marinos incluye dos variantes esenciales: bioestimulacin y bioaumentacin. La seleccin de la tcnica a emplear transita por el anlisis de diferente factores abiticos y biticos que influyen en el proceso de biodegradacin; los factores abiticos incluyen los relacionados con el contaminante y las condiciones medio ambientales, y los biticos, todo lo referente a la poblacin microbiana. En el desarrollo de la de la tecnologa de la biorremediacin se han formulado diversos tipos de productos comercializables.
