En un jardn tenebroso es una novela de la guerra civil presentada desde un punto de vista singular. Los personajes pretenden situarse al margen del conflicto, encerrados en un mundo propio, rodeados de un jardn con rboles.Cuando la guerra traspasa la verja de lanzas del jardn y la espesura de rboles, este mundo forjado al otro lado del Ocano, en Mjico, se tambalea, y estos personajes, sin que ni siquiera ellos tengan clara conciencia de ello, van tomando partido. Son testigos implicados a su pesar, que descubren, aunque les cueste admitirlo, que las guerras no pasan en vano. Perplejos y escandalizados asisten a una situacin de brutalidad y de desorden que se desarrolla ms all de las tapias del jardn y aun dentro de los muros de la casa.El anhelo es la restitucin del orden, pero entonces se dan cuenta, con amargura, que, de momento, tan slo ha cambiado de bando la brutalidad. La ternura, la compasin, la piedad, la violencia, el odio, la mezquindad, el resentimiento, la generosidad, la hipocresa, el valor, el escepticismo, el humor, se muestran en ese jardn tenebroso en el que sueos de sangre preludian la llegada del invierno. Se trata de una historia de retaguardia, y como escribe Aquilino Duque en el prlogo, en la retaguardia se hacen pocos disparos, pero stos son mortales de necesidad. El escenario de EN UN JARDN TENEBROSO es la villa nortea de Permalles, situada entre el mar y las montaas y capital del mundo mtico de J. I. Gracia Noriega.
