Revisamos aqu algunos de los mecanismos implicados en el desarrollo de la Encefalopata Heptica (HE), sus consecuencias y las actuales posibilidades teraputicas. Creemos que todos los temas abordados, desde la fisiopatolgicos hasta el tratamiento tienen reas de sumo inters para la evolucin del conocimiento y aspectos con probables controversias. Distintos modelos experimentales estudian las diferentes etapas de la EH. La expresin clnica ms temprana de EH es la Encefalopata Heptica Mnima. Consideramos que un estudio exhaustivo de la Encefalopata Heptica Mnima ser de gran utilidad para identificar las vas que inician o desencadenan las numerosas y complejas vas fisiopatolgicas que posteriormente se interrelacionan. Una vez disparada esta interrelacin se establece una condicin fisiopatolgica muy compleja que dificulta notablemente el poder dilucidar cul ha sido el mecanismo o va disparadora inicial y as poder establecer desde el inicio la secuencia que lleva a establecer la EH. Comprender la fisiopatologa de la Encefalopata Heptica Mnima aportar un marco tericoms completo para el desarrollo de teraputicas adecuadas.
