Obwohl ein seit jeher viel diskutiertes Thema, hat sich die Situation in den letzten 30 Jahren deutlich verschrft; vor allem seitdem sich auch die Politik der Auseinandersetzung damit nicht mehr verwehren kann. Laut der Internationalen Energie Agentur (IEA) steht die Menschheit an einem Scheideweg. Die heutigen Trends von Energieerzeugung und verbrauch sind nicht zukunftsfhig weder in kologischer, wirtschaftlicher noch in sozialer Hinsicht. Dies kann und muss gendert werden. Denn noch ist ein Kurswechsel mglich. Die zentralen Energieherausforderungen unserer Zeit sind die Sicherung einer verlsslichen und bezahlbaren Energieversorgung ebenso wie das Erschaffen eines CO2armen und somit umweltvertrglichen Energieerzeugungssystems. Letztlich legen diese Voraussetzungen als einzig mglichen Schluss nahe, dass wir eine Art Energierevolution brauchen. Sollten wir an dieser Aufgabe scheitern, so ist das Ausma der Folgen nicht wirklich absehbar wenn wir auch heute schon, in Form von Naturkatastrophen, einen kleinen Vorgeschmack davon bekommen. Fossile Energietrger sind heute die wichtigsten Energiequellen. Und trotz immer besser entwickelter alternativer Technologien wird dies v.a. aus Kostengrnden noch lange so bleiben. Dennoch ist eine massive Minderung des Ausstoes klimaschdlicher Treibhausgase unumgnglich, wenn wir eine katastrophale und irreversible Schdigung des Klimasystems noch verhindern wollen.
