Antes de llegar a Londres, el tren qued fuera de servicio. Bill Buford, norteamericano residente en Gran Bretaa, jams haba presenciado una conducta parecida entre los aficionados al ftbol: nunca haba visto a un hooligan ingls, a un vndalo. Haba alguien que realmente tuviese conciencia de lo que suceda todos los sbados en todos los rincones del pas? Por qu no se haba parado nadie a escribir en serio acerca de ellos? Durante los ocho aos que siguieron los aos de las revueltas en los ferries que cruzaban el Canal de la Mancha, de las reyertas en la calle, en los alrededores de los campos de ftbol, de las tragedias de Heysel y de Hillsborough, de la violencia desatada en el Mundial de 1990. Buford se aprest a viajar con los hinchas. Viaj con ellos por Gran Bretaa, Italia, Turqua, Grecia y Alemania. Asisti a reuniones del National Front y fue testigo del saqueo de un pub. Vio apualamientos, escenas de violencia extrema en uno de los casos, la violencia slo pudo detenerse con la llegada de un tanque del ejrcito. Conoci a personas con apodos tales como Pete Parafina, Sammy el Caliente, Cabeza de Piedra... Se hizo amigo de otros, muchos de los cuales estn hoy en la crcel: carteristas, tironeros, atracadores, traficantes de cocana, comerciantes de dinero falsificado, e incluso conoci a uno que le arranc a un polica el ojo de un mordisco.
