Quant au magnifique 'pamphlet' du Paradoxe sur le comdien, peaufin pendant une dcennie partir de 1769, en ne sait gure pourquoi Diderot le garda sous le coude. Ce 'beau paradoxe', qui a fait couler beaucoup d'encre, prtend que 'c'est la sensibilit qui fait les comdiens mdiocres ; l'extrme sensibilit, les comdiens borns ; le sens froid et la tte, les comdiens sublimes' (lettre Grimm, 14 novembre 1769). Ces trois crits placent si incontestablement Diderot entre Aristote et Brecht qu'il n'en fut rien : en France, on prfre la bataille d'Hernani.
