Essstrungen werden dabei als multidimensionales und multikausales Phnomen angesehen. Die Arbeit gliedert sich in 12 Kapitel. Zu Beginn steht die Abgrenzung von gestrtem und normalem Essverhalten. Anhand diagnostischer Kriterien werden die verschiedenen Arten von Essstrungen als auch somatische wie soziale Folgeerscheinungen und psychische Symptome beschrieben. Basierend auf epidemiologische Angaben, ein kurzer Exkurs zur Sozialgeschichte der Strungen werden verschiedene Theorien zur tiologie (psychoanalytischer, persnlichkeitstheoretischer, soziokultureller, gesellschaftlicher sowie biologisch genetischer Ansatz) mit einem besonderen Fokus auf die Familiendynamik im Zusammenhang mit der Magersucht beschrieben. In einer modellhaften Zusammenfassung werden auslsende Faktoren dargestellt, ehe die Essstrungen schlielich als Bewltigungs und Problemlsestrategien interpretiert werden. Die Arbeit endet mit dem Fazit, das im Wesentlichen anregen soll, die Familienforschung (Familiendynamik) im Kontext von Essstrungen weiter zu betreiben, da viele Befunde in diesem Feld noch uneindeutig sind.
