Die vorliegende Arbeit ist die berarbeitete Fassung meiner Dissertation, die im Januar 1996 vom Fachbereich 2 Gesellschafts und Geschichtswis senschaften der Technischen Hochschule Darmstadt angenommen wurde. Arbeiten wie diese sind nicht nur das Ergebnis einer individuellen An strengung, sondern zugleich eines intendierten wie nichtintendierten kollek tiven Prozesses, auch wenn der Autor sie am Ende allein verantworten mu. Dieses Buch ist nicht ohne vielfltige, im nachhinein nicht immer zurechen bare Formen der Anregung und Frderung durch andere entstanden. Der Dank, den ich an dieser Stelle abstatten mchte, gibt deshalb nur ein unvoll kommenes Bild der erfahrenen Untersttzung wieder. Michael Th. Greven gab den Ansto zu dieser Arbeit, begleitete sie kri tisch und frdernd und nahm sie schlielich in die, Studien zur politischen Gesellschaft' auf. Mit Cerstin Gerecht und Alfred Roos habe ich unzhlige, nicht selten kontroverse, aber immer fruchtbare Diskussionen ber Fragen der Organisation, Durchsetzung und Legitimierung, moralischer Forderun gen' gefhrt. Meine Interviewpartner widmeten mir nicht nur viel Zeit, in der sie meine Fragen uerst bereitwillig beantworteten, sondern halfen mir auch bei der Suche nach Dokumenten und, grauer Literatur'. Christoph Weller hat eine frhere Fassung des Manuskriptes in ungemein frderlicher Weise kommentiert. Heidrun Abromeit und Horst Hegmann gaben mir wertvolle Hinweise fr die berarbeitung.
