La gastroenteritis aguda es una de las enfermedades ms comunes en humanos y representa un problema de salud pblica en todo el mundo, debido su alta morbilidad y mortalidad. Estudios previos realizados en Venezuela han permitido evaluar el impacto de las infecciones por rotavirus. Sin embargo, la epidemiologa asociada a la infeccin por agentes entricos emergentes, como son los calicivirus, astrovirus y adenovirus, se desconoce en Venezuela. El presente estudio evalu los aspectos epidemiolgicos y clnicos de los virus causantes de diarrea en una poblacin infantil. Se realiz la caracterizacin gentica de los aislados de norovirus, sapovirus y astrovirus detectados. Adicionalmente, se determin la concentracin de norovirus en heces para estudiar la posible asociacin entre carga viral y severidad de la diarrea y se evalu la asociacin de grupos sanguneos y la susceptibilidad a la infeccin por norovirus, mediante la determinacin de los grupos sanguneos ABO(H). Este estudio confirma el impacto de la infeccin por rotavirus en Venezuela y la importancia de los norovirus como patgenos emergentes causantes de diarrea endmica en nios menores de 5 aos en nuestro medio.
