Hasta la segunda mitad de los aos ochenta, la babesiosis canina, definida como espordica y subtropical, en Espaa era prcticamente desconocida. En Galicia incluso, no constaba a ningn nivel documental su incidencia en los perros. Su aparicin en Galicia, y ms concretamente en visitantes de nuestra clnica desde finales de 1988, produjo una enorme curiosidad por esta enfermedad, que desemboc en que se recogieran todos los datos posibles de los casos que se iban diagnosticando desde ese momento. Datos fsicos, hallazgos clnicos y sintomatologa constituyeron un primer bloque de datos que se analizaron estadsticamente. Igualmente, datos extrados de las analticas sanguneas (hemograma y bioqumica srica) tambin fueron sometidos a evaluacin estadstica, as como los datos de incidencia de la enfermedad, que, al ser transmitida por vectores , demostr una estacionalidad muy clara a lo largo del ao y durante los 15 aos que dur la recogida de datos en los ms de 600 perros diagnosticados de babesiosis canina. Incluso se llev a cabo un pequeo estudio de la coagulacin en un lote de enfermos.
