Um preislich attraktiv, unterdessen aber trotzdem profitabel zu bleiben, wird nach Kostensenkungspotentialen innerhalb aller Unternehmensbereiche gesucht. Dabei sind die Einsparpotentiale von Produktion und Vertrieb jedoch meist ausgereizt, wodurch der Einkauf als Kostenreduktionshebel mit groem Potential verbleibt. Getreu dem kaufmnnischen Motto Der Gewinn liegt im Einkauf' wurde Ende der 1990er Jahre im Rahmen des InternetBooms die Beschaffung ber das Internet als die Lsung zur Reduktion von Prozess und Transaktionskosten, Einstandspreisen sowie zur Prozessvereinfachung angesehen. Auerdem sollte dies den Einkufern die Mglichkeit verschaffen, sich statt mit zeitaufwndigen SachbearbeitungsTtigkeiten aufzuhalten, wieder mehr den strategischen, wertschpfenden Beschaffungsaufgaben widmen zu knnen. Jedoch kam fr eine Vielzahl der Unternehmen die Ernchterung sehr schnell. Fr das Scheitern des EProcurement dieser Unternehmen wurden vor allem Kompatibilittsprobleme der Systeme und ein Misserfolg vieler elektronischer Marktpltze mangels Masse an Lieferanten ausgemacht.
