Rejecting the egalitarian framework within which women now argue for their rights, Elizabeth H Wolgast asserts that egalitarian reasoning on the subject of women's rights creates logical difficulties. A just society cannot ignore the inherent differences between men and women. The author argues, it must deal with those differences respectfully and fairly and develop accommodating institutions. She 'calls for a new social model, one that recognizes asymmetry in human relationships and thus lays the groundwork for an appropriate program of women's rights. Although philosophical in its approach, Equality and The Rights of Women is easily accessible to the general reader. Wolgast's tone is affirmative and her final suggestions are practical.
