In der deutschen Soziologie und Sozialpsychologie ist er jedoch nur am Rande beachtet worden. So sind seine wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten gerade im deutschen Sprachraum weitgehend unrezipiert geblieben. Aufgrund seines "Erfolges" mit Die Kunst des Liebens und Haben oder Sein wurde er lange Zeit als populrwissenschaftlicher Autor verkannt. Dabei wurde bersehen, da das Frommsche Werk befruchtende Bezge zu Fragen sozial wissenschaftlicher Theoriebildung aufweist und originre Beitrge zur Gesellschafts und Erzie hungskritik leistet. In der Rekonstruktion dieser Bezge und Beitrge erschliet die vorliegende Studie das Frommsche Denken fr die Soziologie und Sozial psychologie. Ein besonderer Akzent liegt auf der interdisziplinr zu konstituie renden Erziehungstheorie, fr die Fromm wesentliche soziologischpsychoana lytische und anthropologischkulturalistische Begrndungszusammenhnge vor gegeben hat. Der visionre Gehalt seines Denkens kommt besonders in seinen gesellschaftsund erziehungstheoretischen Anstzen zum Tragen, die immer auch auf seine frhen Arbeiten zu einer materialistischen Sozialpsychologie verweisen. Mein Interesse an der Kritischen Theorie der Frankfurter Schule, die seit 1930 im Institut fr Sozialforschung, unter Horkheimer als seinem Direktor, entwickelt wurde, richtete sich in den letzten Jahren zunehmend auf das erste Jahrzehnt der Institutsarbeit und dabei besonders auf den Frommschen Beitrag. Es ist nur wenig bekannt, da Fromm in den dreiiger Jahren als festangestellter Mitarbeiter Horkheimers die frhe Kritische Theorie in ihrer interdisziplinren und materialistischen Grundkonzeption entscheidend beeinflut hat.
