Klassische Liebesmodelle finden sich bereits zu Anfang der Philosophie in der Griechischen Antike bei Platon und auch bei Aristoteles. Aktuelle Philosophien der Liebe haben ihren Ursprung in Platons Symposion und Aristoteles Nikomachischer Ethik. Die philosophische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema der Liebe und Freundschaft finden ihren historischen Ausgangspunkt, den Beginn einer umfangreichen antiken Diskussion, bereits in Platons Dialog Lysis, der in der aktuellen philosophischen Debatte weitgehend unbercksichtigt bleibt. Der Begriff der Liebe in der Antike bezieht sich einerseits auf die einheitsstiftenden Beziehungen beseelter oder beseelt gedachter Wesen und steht somit in direkter Verwandtschaft mit der Freundschaft. Andererseits bezieht sich der antike Liebesbegriff auf die Kraft, die empfunden auf solche Vereinigungen hinwirkt. Hier ist eine Verwandtschaft mit dem Begehren und Erstreben gegeben. Der Sprachgebrauch weist eine Vielzahl von Bezeichnungen aus, die durchaus vertauschbar sind. Synonymie ist niemals gegeben. Platons Liebesbegriff unterscheidet diese zwei Formen der Zuneigung: Eros und Philia. In seinen philosophischerotischen Dialogen Lysis und Symposion werden diese Begriffe herausgearbeitet. In seinem Frhwerk Lysis untersucht Platon das Thema der Philia, im spter entstandenen Symposion berwiegt der Eros. In der Synthese von Eros und Philia, der beiden Bedeutungstendenzen der Liebe, findet Platon hier ihre Einheit.
