Mxico es uno de los centros de origen y diversificacin de la agricultura mundial. La mayor parte de sus recursos genticos para la alimentacin y la agricultura se han generado en la milpa, un agroecosistema de policultivo que origin aproximadamente 100 especies de cultivos que han sido aprovechados como alimentos, condimentos, tintes, ornamentos y materias primas con diversos usos desde hace ms de nueve mil aos. Esta agrodiversidad ha sido la base de la subsistencia de pueblos que han desarrollado grandes culturas. Sin embargo, tal patrimonio biocultural es un elemento poco valorado en el estudio del desarrollo econmico, social y cultural; ahora, por el contrario, se considera a la milpa como parte de la cultura de la pobreza. Los nuevos tiempos de la globalizacin tienden a reducir las especies y las variedades de los campos de cultivos del mundo. Y la milpa en Mxico no ha sido la excepcin. Apoyado en el enfoque de la ecologa cultural, en este libro se estudian las mudanzas de la milpa y la agrodiversidad entre los zoquepopoluca durante el siglo XX. Un pueblo heredero del territorio y la lengua de los olmecas, ubicado al sur del estado de Veracruz, en los Tuxtlas.
