El gnero Eryngium presenta una distribucin cosmopolita, con particularidades en cuanto a sus usos segn la regin donde se encuentren. De las especies citadas para Argentina, Eryngium horridum, es considerada una maleza frecuentemente presente en los sistemas ganaderos. Este libro presenta un estudio sobre la diseminacin natural de E. horridum, la germinacin y la relacin con el establecimiento a campo. Como resultado se asoci la diseminacin con la direccin de los vientos predominantes. Adems se encontr la mxima expresin de vigor de las semillas a los 92 das despus de la cosecha, con ndices de velocidad de germinacin de 8.80 para las semillas expuestas bajo pastizal sin corte. El promedio de semillas vacas en los tratamientos con semillas expuestas a campo fue 39%. Se establecieron 130 y 54 plantas por metro cuadrado en suelo desnudo y bajo pastizal cortado, respectivamente. Comparando los valores de establecimiento con la densidad inicial, slo un 9% logr establecerse sobre suelo desnudo. La mxima emergencia de E. horridum ocurri en invierno coincidiendo con bajas temperaturas, alta humedad relativa y la superacin de la dormicin de las semillas.
